Vegetation fires are a constant hazard across Otago. They most commonly occur in summer and autumn but are a potential risk at any time – particularly in the “Red Zones” around Queenstown Hill and Mt Iron in Wanaka, where a total fire ban is in place year round.
Fires can be sparked by human activity, such as camp fires escaping, fireworks, rubbish fires and bonfires or rural burn-offs getting out of control. Car accidents, arcing or fallen power lines are also common causes of fires, along with sparks from lawnmowers, or carelessly discarded cigarette butts. Lightening strikes also cause fires.
If you have a lifestyle block, a farm, or a property on the edge of town then you may be at risk from a vegetation fire. You are also at higher risk if your property is within the “Red Zone” for Queenstown or Wanaka.

Fire and Emergency NZ gives the following advice for rural properties:
Listen to the radio for instructions from FENZ or Civil Defence.
If you are told to evacuate, get out and stay out until given the all clear to return
Take personal belongings, important documents and pets with you if there is time to collect these safely before you leave
Do not return to your property until you have been given the all clear by FENZ or Civil Defence
Be aware that if your garden or surrounding area has been burnt, the fire may have created new hazards such as hidden holes where tree roots have burnt underground.
Your home may need to be checked by a Council building inspector before you can move back in.
